A YORKSHIRE business has given the county’s air ambulance charity a huge lift by agreeing to donate a percentage of takings from a two-day fundraising weekend.
Redbrick Mill, in Batley, home to more than 40 retailers specialising in interiors, has teamed up with the Yorkshire Air Ambulance charity to host an event this Saturday and Sunday at the Bradford Road complex. A percentage of every sale will go directly to the charity.
Redbrick managing director Alastair Bailey said: “It is important, more than ever in the tough economic climate that companies put something back into the local community and ensure that local charities are not forgotten during this difficult period.”
He said the air ambulance charity ensured a speedy response during medical emergencies, particularly in hard-to-reach areas and rural communities.
His decision to team up with the charity was partly inspired by a survival story of the son of Redbrick’s head of maintenance, Vaun Pollard.
Mr Pollard’s son Stephen, now 32, was riding a motorcycle near Hornsea in 2009 when he was involved in a collision with a car.
He was airlifted to hospital with multiple injuries, some life-threatening, which included a fractured skull, shattered thigh and blood loss.
His father credits his survival to the speed of the air ambulance.
The partnership between Redbrick and the charity will last six months, with an initial target of raising £10,000.
The charity provides a rapid emergency response to five million people but needs £7,200 a day to keep both air ambulances maintained and airborne.
Charity spokeswoman Abby McClymont said: “Redbrick Mill’s aim to raise £10,000 is exceptional. We are very grateful to them for their support.”
